I am thrilled to share some exciting new initiatives at Triton Public Schools this fall, starting in 2024. We are expanding our PreK program and adding some amazing programming to our Kindergarten classes. Our PreK program will be offering 4 and 5 day a week classes this fall. We are also exploring the possibility of adding a Spanish Immersion PreK program that would also be offered 5 days a week. If you are interested in our PreK opportunities registration begins March 1st for our current families and March 15th for new registrations. If you are interested in the Spanish Immersion Program, please contact the community education office for updates and information. Our Kindergarten classes next year will be play based with an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). All sections will be based on this model with an additional section that will be nature based.

These will be a great additions to the already amazing opportunities that we have at our elementary school. Currently, we are one of the few elementary schools that still provide physical education to our students every day. As a former physical education teacher, I firmly believe that providing physical education everyday to our students provides and immense benefit from consistent engagement. This is often a program that gets cut in many districts and students are limited to having this experience on a rotating basis rather than every day as we do here at Triton. Of course, we also provide recess on a daily basis, but having these opportunities for young students to play and have a structured physical eduation class set us apart from many other districts.

Beyond our regular elementary school classrooms that provide optimal small class sizes are the other specialist classes that are provided for our elementary school students. Music, Computer, Art and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) classes help provide a rich experience for our elementary school students. In the Triton School District our elementary school specialists are experts in their content area that teach each of these courses to our elementary students.

Triton Elementary School also offers daily lessons at their morning meetings in SEL (Social Emotional Learning). The five core concepts of SEL are self-awareness, self-management, social awarness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. These skills help students deal with everyday challenges to help them become better problem solvers. The elementary also recognizes the positive behaviors of students as a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention Strategies) school. This program emphasizes and promotes the four general rules of being safe, respectful, responsible and hard working.

There has been a great deal of talk about the Science of Reading and the new READ Act that was passed in the last legislative session. The importance of learning to read at a young age is crucial for future success with learning. Our elementary has been implementing these strategies with the curriculum that was purchased a couple of years ago. Witnessing the progress of our young readers is truly exciting. I feel blessed to work in such an amazing school district that provides a world class learning experience.

Please reach out to me with any questions that you may have regarding our school district. You can email me at schlich@triton.k12.mn.us or you can call me at 507-418-7530 to reach me at the district office. I would be happy to set up a time to meet with you or your organization. Communication is an important aspect of my job responsibility, and I welcome the opportunity to gain experience from your perspective. GO COBRAS!
