“Let His Light Shine!”

Posted

A couple of summers ago, my family and I had the privilege of taking a trip North of Duluth and we visited the beautiful and famous “Split Rock Lighthouse”, located on the North Shore of Lake Superior. As many of you know, this lighthouse was built in response to the great winter gale of Nov. 27-29, 1905, that claimed 78 lives and disabled or destroyed 29 ships. At the time of its construction, there were no roads to the area and all building materials and supplies arrived by water and were lifted to the top of the cliff by crane. The light was first lit on July 31, 1910, and it saved many, many lives during its years of service.

As the guide was joyfully leading us through this beautiful National Historic Landmark, nicely explaining how the lighthouse was used as a refuge to lost ships for guidance and safety purposes, the Lord reminded me of another lighthouse, a spiritual one. The lighthouse is the perfect metaphor for describing the Christian life. The attributes of Split Rock Lighthouse, are similar to the hope we have in our Savior, Jesus Christ.

• Jesus came as refuge to a dying, sin-sick world and He offers His salvation to all who believe in His name - “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

• Split Rock Lighthouse warned ships of danger, and the mission of God’s people here on earth is to provide spiritual direction to all who would listen. We are God’s lighthouse because Jesus lives in us. Jesus Christ is our guiding light. He came to show us the way to our heavenly Father and has given us that same "light" to shine before mankind. When believers in Christ work together in unity, their fellowship of faith provides spiritual light in the world’s darkness (Philippians 2:15-16).

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. . . . Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:14-16).

Dear Christian friend, how does your light shine? Be a shining light for Him today!

You are called with a holy calling

The light of the world to be;

To lift up the lamp of the Savior

That others His light may see. — Anon.
